Is natural perfume the same as normal perfume?
Why choose a natural scent?
As we are all about natural perfume, we thought we’d take a look at what the difference is between a natural scent and others.
All scent would have originally been natural
Originally, perfume or scent would have been all natural and was created from plant or flower essences or resins and were probably used to mask less attractive odours as wet rooms and ensuites weren’t quite as available as they are now! The alchemist or perfumer might also mix medicines and the benefits of aromatherapy were probably enjoyed alongside. Some lighter flower waters could be dabbed on and sniffed if there was a pungent smell in a room, for example.
Why do we wear scent?
Fast forward many, many years and we (mostly) no longer need to mask unpleasant smells and use perfume as a more luxury item. Although, having said that, air freshener sprays and plug ins or scented candles are still used for that purpose much of the time. But an eau de parfum or cologne will be sprayed or dabbed to bring a feeling of pleasure, delight, positivity and even to attract potential partners. This is where some animal products became used such as musk or ambergris (from whales) as some believed they would make us more attractive by mimicking pheromones.
What’s natural perfume?
Natural perfume or fragrance should be made from ingredients which come from botanicals - plant and flower essences or resins and that are naturally occurring. Usually a combination of plant based essential oils and waters with a carrier like alcohol or oil. These ingredients, just like everything in nature, can be unpredictable and take great expertise in blending them to create a fine, multi layered scent.
