Earth Day - time to celebrate

“The Earth has much music for those who listen” William Shakespeare

At Jones & Modha we love all things natural and nature - so much so that we were determined to create a natural fragrance that had minimal impact on the environment - to create a sustainable perfume in as mindful a way as was possible. We read and write a lot about how to be more sustainable, how to minimise our impact on the environment, and sometimes all this can get a little overwhelming, if not depressing. So we’re taking the fact that it’s Earth Day as an opportunity to focus on all things positive and celebrate our Earth, a place that we all have in common.

Earth Day offers us a moment to pause and of course, consider how we can best care for our brilliant planet, as well as ponder upon how truly amazing it is. And as we are all about pleasure as well as sustainability, we thought we’d focus on our fascination with this great planet and all that it brings us.

In the busy-ness of life, it’s easy to forget that we’re living on such an incredibly interesting and generous planet. It’s the only known planet to support an atmosphere with oxygen, liquid water on the surface and let’s not forget about the miraculous fact that it supports LIFE, yes that’s us.

We do like a good fact….

  • Earth travels fast! At around 1.3million miles an hour to be precise!

  • It’s not a perfect sphere - it’s a bit squashed at its poles and slightly swollen at the equator.

  • The Earth is 18 galactic years old. A galactic year is apparently 220, 230 million years and that is 10,000 times older than us humans.

  • About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water

  • The Earth’s core is as hot as the surface of the sun

  • There are more microbial species on Earth than stars in the Milky.

  • Only 14% of the world’s species have been identified - how incredible is that!

She’s a generous Earth….

It’s worth stopping for a moment to think about what the earth gives us. From water to drink and bathe, beautiful pollinators that enable crop cultivation (and flowers!), creatures that naturally control pests, soil for us to grow our food, medicine (many current day medicines were originally derived from plant essences), climate regulation through the worlds ecosystem, health - we know that being in nature has a positive effect on our stress levels and mental health. And let’s not forget that immense pleasure it provides us with in its sheer beauty and ability to bring joy to all our senses through the taste of its produce to the array of fragrance present in nature, something that we clearly adore! It’s easy to forget too that we are part of the earth’s cleverly balanced system and working with it and not against it will bring greater rewards for all.

She grounds us

Just thinking about and celebrating the earth that we live on is an immensely grounding experience, something which we know we should do more of. If you take anything away from reading this and Earth Day, we hope you take away an appreciation and a gratitude for something that so many of us take for granted.

Happy Earth Day!

“Earth's crammed with heaven...
But only he who sees, takes off his shoes.”
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
