The powers of gingko

The wisest tree

We at Jones & Modha are in deep awe of nature and make sure we take time to observe her around us. This time of year is a good time to notice all the wonderful trees and the changes taking place as they transition through Autumn to Winter. The colours are awe inspiring and remind us again and again of the wonder of natural colour and what our beautiful planet is capable of.

One particularly fascinating tree is the Gingko tree.

With its unique leaf shape and sunshine yellow Autumn leaves, the Gingko tree is a tree of particular power, wisdom and ancient history.
Known as the "living fossil" as it’s one of the oldest living tree species - it was on earth 250 million years ago, surviving many extinction events, demonstrating its incredible natural resilience.
Native to Far East Asia, it is sacred to Buddhists and Taoists and is used to make furniture in Buddhist temples - making us think it must have some holy wisdom and strong meditative properties.
It is a unique tree as it has no living direct relatives and has been known to live for up to 1000 years - just think of what it has seen on this earth!
It has been for centuries associated with the treatment of asthma and bronchitis, some blood disorder and perhaps more commonly known to aid concentration and memory issues in the form of Gingko Biloba supplements.
The wood is soft and light and has insect repelling qualities - another natural property that makes us love it even more.

You see them in many towns and cities and they’re easy to identify from their leaves - next time you see one, take a moment to consider its feeling of powerful calm.
