Been to the beach recently?
If you’ve spent any time on a UK beach this Summer, you may have noticed plastic rubbish washed up on the shores and thought about what happens to it. It’s now pretty well known that the amount of junk in our oceans is reaching crisis level, but did you know there are all sorts of amazing people doing something about it?
We do love a bit of positive news (check them out) and an article caught our attention on a group of people in Cornwall who are determined to clean up our oceans. Through Clean Ocean Sailing and the help of many volunteers, Monika Hertlova and Steve Green with their two year ol and Labrador, Rosie, have been sailing the seas aboard their ship Annette, coordinating over 300 volunteers on small boats who reach many innaccessible caves and coves to collect rubbish which is then recycled as much as is possible. They have also been supported by donations to keep the volunteers going on board - with beer and groceries.
They say they’ve found fishing gear and crates from as far as South Africa, China, South and North America. Some of the plastic is repurposed through the Oceans Recovery Project and made into kayaks which are then used to assist the clean up.
Their “Rapid response unit” where people send them a photo of large items of plastic and volunteers from their team of 20 rapid responders pick up the items before they’re washed out to sea on the next tide.
It’s so heartening, isn’t it, to hear of such brilliant people?
Creative people using beach junk
On the subject of cleaner oceans and stuff left on beaches, we came across Washed and Found, who makes jewellery out of the bits and bobs found on our shores. We think her pieces are absolutely stunning and such a superb idea. Catrin has one of their bangles and it is much admired.
They are available at Frankly store, a gorgeous shop in Wapping Wharf in Bristol (and they have an online store) who sells many lovely sustainable things. They also stock Jones & Modha, which makes us love them even more.
We also absolutely love Sadie Jewellery who makes stunning jewellery using glass found on beaches and eco silver.
If you know of any great people doing similar things, let us know!
